Matrix has earned a beloved reputation in the haircare industry for doing just that, and with options galore for every hair type and concern, the brand may have just what you need to take your routine to the next level.
Matrix Haircare was launched in 1980 by Arnie Miller and his wife Sydell. Both were hairdressers before they spotted an opportunity to support salon professionals who wanted to perfect their craft with no limitations. With inspiration and innovation at the forefront, the line has revolutionized haircare with effective products that deliver instant results. Committed to being one of the most inclusive hair brands in the industry, Matrix has made it possible for all to achieve salon results in the comfort of their own homes.
Matrix
Founded: In 1980, by husband-and-wife duo Arnie and Sydell Miller.
Location: New York
Pricing: $$
Best known for: At-home toning ranges and other color maintenance products.
Hero product: Total Results So Silver, a neutralizing range that cools down and enhances blonde and silver hair.
Fun fact: Before launching Matrix, co-founder Arnie Miller founded Ardell, one of the world’s bestselling faux lash brands. The brand name is a combination of Arnie and Sydell’s first names. Also, hairstylist Tabatha Coffey from Bravo’s Tabatha Takes Over and Shear Genius is one of Matrix’s ambassadors.
Other brands you’ll love: Redken, Amika, Biolage, Shu Uemura, Nexxus, Renpure
After years working in the hair industry, the Millers decided it was time to provide hairdressers with the products they needed in order to do their best work while expressing their creativity. Both of them wanted to ‘’celebrate and enable self-expression,’’ Matrix’s general manager, Carrington Cole, tells Byrdie. The Millers knew that if professionals had the products they needed to deliver the best results for their clients' hair, they would continue to excel in their craft. They chose the name Matrix in the hopes of ‘’creating a vast network of hairdressers who can support one another and instill confidence,’’ Cole explains.
Something else that makes Matrix stand out is the brand's commitment to offering a wide range of products for all hair types, colors, and textures. ‘’Matrix is the only professional hair brand that has strengthening and repairing pre-bonded technology built into every single color formula in order to protect all hair types during the color process,’’ Cole says. Color is a great way to experiment with your look, and given how important it is to care for your hair before, during, and after the process, Matrix's products can be game-changing as they protect strands while preventing breakage. So if you have fragile or damaged hair and still want to switch up your color from time to time, the brand might just have something to help.

Total Results So Silver
Created to neutralize brassiness in blonde hair and enhance silver tones in gray or platinum hair, the Total Results So Silver collection comprises three products: a purple shampoo, a conditioner, and a toning mask.
This purple shampoo works to neutralize unwanted brassiness, eliminating dull and yellow tones. Great for colored hair as well as those with natural blonde or silver strands, this product can enhance your look by illuminating highlights and boosting brightness. One of the key ingredients here is salicylic acid, which some of you may know as a skincare ingredient, but it also can help with scalp health, as its exfoliating properties can remove dry skin and dandruff.
To use this shampoo, apply it to wet hair while wearing suitable gloves, work into a lather, and rinse well. Repeat if necessary. For additional benefits, the shampoo can be left on hair and lathered on for three to five minutes.
Dry, brittle hair can be difficult to manage, but a moisture boost can help. This conditioner hydrates hair through targeted nutrition technology designed to boost smoothness for a silky, nourished result. Matrix understands the challenges that can arise when maintaining blonde, platinum, and gray hair, so if you're looking for a conditioner that will effectively deal with any tone issues while adding shine, you might want to try this one.
To use this conditioner, apply it to wet hair, lather with a massaging motion, and rinse thoroughly. The brand recommends pairing the shampoo and conditioner to help maintain your bright blonde or silver hair.
This deep treatment will take your toning to the next level, brightening and banishing unwanted yellow tones in blonde hair and adding beautiful silver tones to platinum hair. The mask contains neutralizing pigments and progressive technology that will work to leave your hair feeling silky-smooth as you tone strands to your desired result. If you want to repair damage and enhance your hair’s health while achieving your color goals, you might benefit from incorporating this mask into your routine.
Due to its highly pigmented formula, the brand recommends skipping the So Silver Conditioner when you use this mask. After using the So Silver Shampoo, apply the mask to wet hair and comb through for an even distribution (don’t forget to wear gloves first). Avoid the scalp area and leave the product on for three to five minutes depending on the level of neutralization you need, then rinse it out.

Total Results Brass Off
The brand's first system to neutralize orange brassy tones, every product in this line works to moisturize strands and prevent the breakage that commonly happens to color-damaged hair. Three products make up the collection: a blue shampoo, a conditioner, and a neutralizing mask.
Created for brunettes who lighten their hair, this shampoo combines vitamin oil and neutralizing blue-violet pigments to refresh, clarify, and tone strands, helping to reduce any brassiness. Like other Matrix products, this is also suitable for color-treated and natural hair.
Before using this product, wear suitable gloves. Apply the shampoo onto wet hair, lather, and rinse well. For best results, leave it on for three to five minutes before rinsing, and follow with the Brass Off Conditioner. For neutralization, this shampoo is suitable for use every other day.
Also featuring vitamin oil, this non-color-depositing formula works to retain cool tones while nourishing and hydrating strands. According to the brand, the Brass Off system can reduce breakage by up to six times, so if you color your hair frequently or are prone to damage, it’s worth giving the entire range a try. For best results, apply this product to wet hair after the Brass Off Blue Shampoo, massage it in, and rinse.
Ideal for fragile or damaged hair, this mask contains a highly pigmented, color-depositing formula that works to maintain lightened hair by neutralizing brassy and orange tones. Suitable for both natural and color-treated hair, the ultra-rich formula allows for targeted application, and the addition of shine-enhancing ingredients helps hair to reflect light to give it luster. It's also available in a single-use packet, which is great for travel or for determining whether it works for you before investing in a full-sized bottle.
As with other products in Matrix’s collections, you'll need to wear suitable gloves before application. For best results, apply the mask to wet hair and comb through, avoiding the scalp area. Leave it on for five to 10 minutes depending on the level of neutralization you desire, then rinse it out.

Total Results A Curl Can Dream
A Curl Can Dream is Matrix's newest line of innovative products. Created to preserve hair’s curl pattern from beginning to end (including highlighting, care, and styling), the collection was developed over three years in collaboration with pattern experts including the brand’s artistic director, Michelle O’Connor. ‘’The collection has been tested on over 300 women and evaluated via the Hair Diversity Matrix, an internal scorecard which ensures the brand’s products address the unique needs of every hair type, color, and texture,’’ Cole explains.
Enriched with manuka honey extract and ceramides, these formulas offer the ideal calibration between moisture and definition to preserve and enhance every pattern. If you want to breathe new life into your beautiful curls, this could be the line for you.
This sunflower seed-infused oil does wonders for curls and coils. Hailed by Matrix as the perfect finisher to define curls and add shine, it’s silicone-free and leaves hair soft, shiny, and sleek.
For best results, use this product in a routine with the A Curl Can Dream Shampoo or Co-Wash and Mask. Dispense several pumps of oil into your hands and apply liberally to hair, from root to tip. Allow your hair to air dry or diffuse it, depending on your preference.
This moisturizing cream doubles as a leave-in conditioner, giving curls and coils the moisture and definition they need without any flaking or crunching. Customer reviews on the brand’s website attest to this product's curl-transforming properties, with many claiming that their curls were smoother and bouncier than ever.
To use, apply your desired amount of product to soaking wet hair from root to tip (less for fine hair and more for thick hair) after shampooing or co-washing. Be sure to section off strands as you go. Once this step is complete, scrunch your curls, follow with the A Curl Can Dream line's Light Hold Gel and Lightweight Oil, and allow hair to air dry or diffuse.
